Burgundy
Burgundy is a complicated region of small vineyards, full of subtle shifts in terroir. The climate is northern continental, which can mean severe winters, spring frosts and hot summers with the risk of heavy rain. However all these climatic hazards which put Burgundy on the periphery of the wine-producing area result in some sublime wines.
Chardonnay is the white grape of Burgundy (the only other white grape used is Aligote which is high in acid and often used in sparkling wines) and Pinot Noir is used to make the elegant reds of the region. In Beaujolais in the south of the Burgundy area, Gamay is grown.
