In the Southern Rhone, three villages have been recognised with their own appellation; Gigondas is one of these. The Dentelles de Montmirail is a small range of mountains that divide the appellation into two distinct areas – one with a cooler climate and one slightly hotter. Altitude is also a factor in production as vines grow to about 600m. Grenache must make up 80% of any blend, Syrah and Mourvedre usually accounts for most the rest. These are big, powerful red wines.
