Bolgheri

In the coastal west of Tuscany is The Maremma. Like the Medoc this is a natural swamp and requires human management. 2,000 years ago the Etruscans achieved this but the underground canals they created fell into disrepair. It was Mussolini who re-established the area and winemaking here revived too, paving the way for wines like Sassicaia and Morellino di Scansano.
