This small wine producing area is in Catalonia and is very highly regarded in terms of the quality of the red wines. The volcanic origin of the soil has a marked influence. Garnacha has a strong foothold but international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah are also grown very successfully. The region was pionnered by a group of winemakers in the 1980s who formed a co-operative. They innovatively planted vines in walled vineyards - 'clos' and irrigated them, producing rich dark and complex wines as a result.
