The tiny Beechworth region has a loyal following amoungst supporters of premium Australian wines. It is in the North-East of Victoria and vineyards cluster around the town which is perched on a steep hillside. The climate alters considerably with changes in altitude and in some places there is a risk of frost. Water availability is also a problem and most vineyards are dry-grown. The elegant and long-lived Chardonnays of Giaconda are the flag-bearer, but Sorrenberg has an intensely loyal following. Shiraz is also a highlight, with some similarities to the wines of the Cote Rotie.
