The Herring, Mawgan Porth

If you're visiting Cornwall this summer you'll be spoilt with a choice of great food destinations - from Michelin-Starred dining rooms to gastro pubs, tapas bars and informal beach-side cafes serving up delicious seafood. However one reservation which should definately be on your list is for new restaurant The Herring at Bedruthan Hotel, Mawgan Porth.

Bedruthan Hotel perches above Mawgan Porth beach, north of Newquay. The hotel is family-friendly with dining options split between the colourful and relaxed Wild Cafe, and The Herring, with it's exciting menu focusing on seafood and Asian flavours.

The Herring is the result of a collaboration between hotel owners (3 sisters - Debbie, Rebecca & Emma, whose pioneering eco-hotel The Scarlet is located nearby) and Michael Smith of Porthminster Beach Cafe in St Ives. "Our collaboration brings an exciting new approach to cooking Cornish seafood, and restaurant design that is as inspiring as the food," say the group.

Head Chef Ryan Venning, who worked with Michael in St Ives for many years, leads an experienced team with a passion for fresh flavours and carefully sourced ingredients. The menu is inspired by the diversity and quality of seafood landed in Cornwall, and sustainability is high on the agenda. Mussels, lobster, crab, scallops and oysters feature alongside mackeral, pollock, hake and seabass. Lovers of seafood will really be in their element here, but the menu also features dishes to satisfy the dedicated meat eater - duck and beef are both from Cornwall's finest suppliers and cooked to absolute perfection.

You can sample the cooking, as well as enjoy fantastic views at lunch for just £16 for two courses. A three-course dinner is £35. The menu changes often, and there are vegetarian options. We have worked with the team at the hotel to create a great wine list, with plenty of delicious wines designed to work beautifully with the fresh and exciting dishes coming from the kitchen.
