Wine at Weddings: How to stand out from the crowd

If you're planning a wedding at the moment you may well be asking yourself how you can do things a little differently, putting a stamp of personality on the celebration and fixing it in memory as a really special and unique occasion. Whilst most people spend a lot of time agonizing over the style of food, the drinks offering often comes way down the list. Yet choosing the drinks is an opportunity to serve something really original and fun, which family and friends will love.

We've put together a few ideas to inspire you. Some are quirky and decidely different; guaranteed to provoke comment! Others would be excellent as part of a fabulous foodie celebration, no matter what style of feasting is planned. As with so much of our catalogue, many of these suggestions have superb organic and natural credientials, and are from artisan producers (to read more about organic, biodynamic and natural wines click here) So, if sustainability and thoughtful sourcing are high on your agenda, here's a taster of what we have to offer:

Welcome Drink

If yours is a spring or summer celebration, your guests might need a refreshing pick-me-up after the ceremony. White Port & Fever Tree Tonic is thirst-quenching and a little different. “Like a puppy, port is not just for Christmas. This summer, try white port and tonic. Pour a generous measure of white port into a tumbler, top up with tonic and plenty of ice, add a curl of lemon peel or a spring of mint. Bring on the bowls of salted almonds and olives and enjoy.” Joanna Simon, Sunday Times Style

With Nibbles

If you're going for bubbles, try something organic and uplifting. Our Casa Coste Piane Prosecco is made in the Champagne method so has a little extra complexity, but is still elegant and full of crisp minerally, citrusy notes. For cheerful pink sparkling, iconic producer Mas du Daumas Gassac make a lovely Rose Frizzant packed with delicious red fruits. Again the grapes are grown using sustainable, organic methods and the winemaking process remains as natural as possible.

If you're up for creating a real talking point, why not offer guests Txacoli (pronounced Chacoli) white or rose. These wines are poured from a great height into little tumblers by flamboyant Spaniards in the tapas bars of the Basque country. A slightly spritzy explosion of green-tinted crisp apples or violets and red fruits await you; the white and rose respectively would bridge both aperitif and starters nicely. They are also only 11% in alcohol, so great for a long day celebrating.

On the table

Although weddings aren't generally the right occasion to explore the fine art of food and wine matching, it's still a good idea to take into account the style of food you'll be serving and which sorts of wine will work best alongside. You'll also of course need to please everyone, no easy task! If you need a helping hand, do give us a call, we're full of good ideas. But here's a few quick suggestions:

Cuvee Marine - Crisp and steely, with hints of grapes, peach & spice.

Verdejo, Casa Maria - Fresh and clean and great with a variety of seafood.

Coreto Branco - Dry, crisp and refreshing Portuguese white with a delicious citrus finish.

Raison Gaulois, Gamay - Light red (great served slightly chilled). Good with charcuterie, terrines and mackerel.

Merlot delle Venezie - Cracking little Italian red, silky smooth, fruity and well balanced.

Gran Cerdo, Tempranillo, Gonzalo Gonzalo - Mini-Rioja full of character. A very versatile food wine, especially good with lamb or perhaps a BBQ?

 And finally....

As well as some fantastic champagnes, we've also got some quirky ideas for cake or dessert. If your having chocolate in one of those forms, your guests will be fascinated and delighted with our Boisson Rouge! This fun sparkling red is slightly sweet and bubbles with strawberries and raspberries, plus a hint of green pepper. Alternatively if you're looking for a partner for summer desserts, you cannot go wrong with one of our all-time favourites - the delicious Moscato d'Asti from Vittorio Bera e Figli. Again slightly sweet and completely cleansing, this would be great with Eton Mess or the like. Perfect to inspire guests onto the dancefloor and pull out those extra-special wedding moves!
