Greece

The history of wine production in Greece of course goes back a very, very long way. All the way back to the days of the ancient civilisation which had such a profound influence on western culture as a whole. Wine played a part, and the Greek's worship of the god of wine Dionysus spread throughout the Mediterranean, as did the production of wine from vitis vinifera vines. Wine is still produced across Greece, including the mainland, the Aegean Islands, Crete and the Ionian Islands. A quality control system is in place, from vin de table all the way up to an 'Appellation of Origin of Superior Quality'. Indigenous varieties are numerous and distinctive.
